Ashish Sankrityayan received training over many years from three leading exponents and teachers of the Dagar tradition: Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar, Ustad Hussain Sayeeduddin Dagar and Ustad Rahim Fahimuddin Dagar through whom he has learnt the various subtle vocal nuances of Dagar Dhrupad. This is one of the oldest forms of Indian classical vocal music, said to have originated in the chanting of Vedic hymns. Ashish has made a documentary film on Dhrupad, ‘the Call of the Deep’.
